FUN FACTS ABOUT ST. THOMAS

1. The US Virgin Islands are twice the size of Washington, DC, at 737 square miles.

2. The United States Virgin Islands have been a popular shopping destination since 1607. When the settlers of Jamestown, the first English settlement on the continent, bought supplies on their way to Virginia, downtown shopping was popular. In fact, the Historic Preservation Office is installing a plaque commemorating this historic visit in St. Thomas.

3. The United States Virgin Islands are the only place in the United States where people drive on the left side of the road. Despite the fact that the islands are now part of the United States, driving dates back to when they were under European control.

4. Camille Pissarro, the famous impressionist painter, was born in St. Thomas in 1830. He contributed significantly to the Impressionism and Post-Impressionism movements. Pissarro lived on St. Thomas until he was 12 years old, and then returned there later in life. After all, who wouldn't want to return to this lovely paradise?

5. St. Croix is home to the Caribbean's oldest Baobab tree. While the tree is native to South Africa, it was brought to and planted in the US Virgin Islands in the 18th century. These trees can grow up to 25 meters tall and live for thousands of years, so we anticipate them remaining on the island for a very long time.
